Was up before dawn and couldn't sleep, so went for a paddle. Just a glorious fall day. Peak colors, peaceful calm water, and wild ducks. Wood ducks are quite shy, and this was the first time I've seen one up close in the wild here.
Melonseeds Off Urbanna

A pair of Melonseed Skiffs sailing out of Urbanna, Virginia. A handmade wooden version, and one made by Roger Crawford. Beautiful weather. A little lumpy while the tide was running against the wind, but laid down nicely later. A clip or two provided by Doug. Photos and history here: eyeinhand.com/2023/09/24/two-if-by-sea/

What do you do when you need to deliver a few thousand dollars worth of oil paintings to a gallery six blocks away, but they're too big to fit in your car? Get friends and family to parade them down the middle of Main Street. The paintings are for a show at 2nd Street Gallery in Charlottesville for six weeks opening April 2023. Thanks for the camera work by TerriLoui.

Mobjack Marsh Cat Sailing

Unexpectedly great sail on Mobjack Bay. We motored Doug’s Marsh Cat out thinking we’d motor back in an hour, but found nice wind and sailed until we ran out of food and water. Well worth it.

Paddling the Canal at Winter Harbor, Virginia
I like your hat, but you should get an old man floppy hat. Some day you’ll be glad you did. Pretty boat. Simple but clean.
That looked so peaceful. Thanks for sharing 😊🌟
I have an old Volvo 240 that I plan to paint in this color using topside paint and this roller and tipping method.
Easy on a small area,I’m a boat painter,Try to paint a 15 meter x 4 meter with the same technique on a 8000 yacht ,not so easy 😮😅😊
Surely. I've seen two people working in tandem on bigger boats - one works the roller, the other follows right behind with the tipping brush. Even they worked inside a big shop, though. Would be really difficult to do outside where you couldn't control wind and sun. More hands wouldn't help. .
beautiful ❤
Just beautiful. I sail both boats ,a Marsh Cat & an Artic Tern . North East Florida
Thanks, you're a lucky guy on all three counts!
Would have been so much better without the music!
a human, a dog, a boat. enjoying a calm loving sail. nothing better.
“Just the tip, just for a second… just to see how it feels.”
These are great sailors and beautiful too!
Thank you for sharing. I owned a Chesapeake Bay Crabbing Skiff built by Marvin. Loved it and wished I still had it. Marvin is such an amazing craftsman! Truly a delightful little boat to row or sail.
Agreed! Loved working with Marvin. And do love his boats.
Wow, that is an absolutely gorgeous boat.
Outstanding! 😍
Great job! I'm just wondering. Don't you get dizzy not using a mask when painting? Aren't the paint fumes bad to inhale?
I had good ventilation, so didn't notice it. But if I were doing it today, I would wear a good mask anyway, for sure. I now have several.
@@eyeinhand thanks for the reply :)
Interesting technique with the roller and brush! Love the finish it gives! I'm going to try this on my next boat painting job!
Great video, beautiful scenery!
Vraiment magnifique !! Merci pour ce partage !!
You have provided me with enough false confidence to go through with this :) I contacted a local body shop and he convinced me to prepare the sailboat hull with Epoxy resin, so now it’s showtime
You can't win if you don't play! ;-)
@@eyeinhandso,far it’s working well and indeed I’m playing :) fast questions, before my second coat, should I dry sand with a 340 grit? Or wet sand with a 340 grit? Thanks once the second coat is on, I’m was going to let it cure about 2 weeks before I wet sand with a 600 grit. Does this make sense? And again thank you for your videos
@@1970swimmer No need to sand between coats, or after. You just need to scuff it between coats to put a tooth in it for the next layer of wet paint to grab. I used those green scouring pads to buff off the shine to a dull mat. Easy, dust free, and leaves all the paint on the surface where you want it. If you use good gloss paint, the final coat will already be shiny, so wet sanding that with any grit will only take some off the gloss off.
Great video, here is a question if I may. What type of paint are you using? And brand? I’m currently sanding an old fibreglass sailboat and once down to the fibreglass do I need to prime it first? Or can this product be painted directly into fibreglass? Thanh you and yes I subscribed and liked the video. Great demo
In the description, you'll find a link to my build blog. There's far more detail there than I can put into a reply here, including the answers you need.
Beauutiful 🥺 🥲 🌺 🌕 Thank you . Keep doing this please
To beautiful for words! Thank you.
10 year old video better than most 30min “how to” today in 2024 🎉🎉🎉
Thanks!
Nice boats. Greetings from New Zealand.
Looking for small boat cruisers in VA. How do you get in touch?
Gloucester and southwestern English, Irish, Scots-Irish….
Wish me luck, my turn next on my camper van.... 🤞
Excellent video, thanks! Timeless, even.... If you still are here, what do you use to scuff between coats? Thx
Glad you like it. I used those green Scotch pads or equivalent. Don't want to remove any paint, just enough to scratch it evenly and put a tooth in it.
Would you sell a full size copy of your mold stations and spacing
Heck, if you had contacted me two years ago I would have sold you my actual molds for the cost of shipping. I held onto them for ten years, but no one seemed interested, so I tossed them out. Unfortunately, I no longer have a way to print the patterns out myself, or found a place to do that at reasonable cost.
Great video! Where was the bulkheaded area at the end of this wonderful trip
That's the canal near Crisfield, MD, between Janes Island State Park and the outer island.
Thank you...again great clip
What paint ratio mix did You use and what type of paint brush?
I hope you see this, just wondering if that is the mast you made in 2016? Am going to follow your method for the mast glue up if it's held up well
I have never been attracted by big sailing boats. Too much costs and problems. To me, nothing beats the pleasure of dinghy sailing. I learned as a kid, then again on a lake under snow 🙂. I am waiting for summer now. Until then, such a pure joy to watch your video ! Thanks !
My friend Al has a theory : the boat length to fun is an inverse relationship. The smaller the boat the more fun you have. Bigger boats mean more worries.
Boat looks great. It looks like it is the Chuckanut 12 standard design and not the 12s? I thought the 12s was a hybrid. From Dave Gentry's site, "The Chuckanut 12"s" is a hybrid version of the C10 and C12. She shares the same frames and narrower beam as the C10, but is 12' long. This boat will be more stable than the C10, and the easiest boat of the three to build. The Chuckanut 12s also shares the longer cockpit of the standard C12. It looks like the tan color skin kayak that you have paddled in videos is the 12s as the cockpit in that boat is longer than standard. I only mention because I am thinking of building the Chuckanut but not sure which way to go, standard or the 12s. Thanks for your great videos. No one does it better for small boats in nature videos. Love them.
The blue one is indeed a 12s. I built it first for my wife, and got to try it out myself before starting the next one. It's perfect for her, and good for some of my friends, but was a bit tight for my almost six foot frame. Mine is the 15, and that's perfect for me and the kind of paddling I do. Not as nimble as the 12s, but tracks well in lakes and swamps, with plenty of room for a cooler and gear, and very stable. Both boats are easy and fun to build, and a real pleasure to use. We've put many miles on them already. This year I glued a strip of tire tube to the bottom edge of bow and stern. I had a lazy habit of gliding right up onto concrete ramps and the frequent abrasion worse through the skin there. And added a coat of paint to the blue one. Otherwise, that's all the maintenance in two years, and the stay outside in the weather all year.
@@eyeinhand Ok. Thanks for the detailed response.
What design are the kayaks, they seem custom built.
They are custom built. Two sizes of Chuckanuts designed by a friend, Dave Gentry. His plans, many different designs,, can be found on the Duckworks boat supply site.
Simply sublime beauty!!! ...and the shots of the submerged tracks and then the Clapper Rail itself were a particular delight to this birder. Thank you for taking me along into this peaceful realm of contemplation.
Nice 👍
I took this immediately to my big screen and sellected five channel surround for the audio - the mrs has another gift this morning, to go with her first cup - thanks so much!
Ha! Thanks, Rob. Hope you guys are doing well.
Thank You...I needed that.
Happy New Year! Thank You for this Magnificent Peaceful adventure.. I've forgotten the names of East Coast Birds, I've lived on the West Coast for over 20+ years now. The Walk on the way to your kayak as you pass the surrounding marsh grass that hugs the boardwalk, and the slow leisure paddling as you and friends enjoy the peaceful quiet of nature. Snow like the release of seeds via the wind; crunching on dropped pine needles in the woods with glints of sun playing with the camera. A Flag at half mast, a lone bird swimming leaving a draft in its forward motion, osprey nests scattered throughout, the sounds of the waves marching towards the islets of marsh grass, sandpipers dancing, driftwood galore scattered here and there like broken toys, and cotton candy like wisps of fog interwoven amongst the trees and over the fields. Just Awesome. Of course there's more... The Birds calling each other , and the lone walker with a bag to pick up trash? with the sun glinting on the waves. The Sunset .... Magnificent. Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed myself. ☺🌟
Well done, Nancy! 🙂
How many coats?
Just two. Other than touching up scratches from oyster bars, I've never had to add another.

Soothing and instructive
Ah thanks. The boats are a lot of fun. The best source for plans is WoodenBoat. I used those in combination with a couple of older versions to get the designs I made, but these are the most comprehensive plans. www.woodenboatstore.com/search?type=product&options%5Bprefix%5D=last&options%5Bunavailable_products%5D=last&q=melonseed www.woodenboatstore.com/products/134-melonseed-skiff?_pos=2&_sid=12587e91e&_ss=r
The combination of nature and your choice of the backing track must have both been made in heaven.
Wow. So beautiful
That's some seriously quiet paddling. 👍 Nice boat, too.
Can't paddle and hold the camera at the same time, so there's a lot of gliding. ;-)
Would you say white is the easiest color as it will show the least amount of imperfections?
Yes, white is definitely more forgiving. Also doesn't get as hot in the sun, another bonus. You can't really see it in this video, but I was building two boats in parallel. The other one is white.
Reminds me of the Lightnings I grew up with back in the 1950s and early 1960s. The traveler on yours is different from what I remember which were either ordinary traveler or two blocks on the deck that the sheet ran through. Earliest boat I crewed on was 1466 Rock N Rye, a Skaneateles built boat ca.1949
It's a fun boat. It got sidelined for a couple of years while I worked on other things, but hope to get back to it in the spring. With some care and attention it will be a versatile boat for years to come.
Im going to watch this video a million times, mainly to help me reduce stress ...
While listening to Peter Gabriel sing about a boat.
